Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version
HackersReknowned Gnome hacker and kernel developer Robert Love has left Novell for unspecified reasons. In the same breath, he announces his acceptance of a position with Google, in the Open Source Program Office. (Note to Chris DiBona: nice score! Booyah!!)
Robert asserts that his exodous has no relationship to the Novell/Microsoft sellout deal (double plus super points to Robert for politeness).

Robert Love is the author of the 2.6 Kernel Development book, published by Novell Press and found on geeky bookshelves everywhere.

Free Linux Driver Development!

Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version
Code devOne of the lead kernel developers has come forward with a slick idea, and most of the Linux kernel development team has volunteered to support him.. As a hardware manufacturer, if you submit your hardware specifications, the kernel developers will write a Linux driver for you for free, and it will continue to be maintained, supported and inserted directly into the kernel tree by the developers that wrote it. That means it's included in all future Linux distros, including "enterprise" Linuxes.

Microsoft VP on Dell: "We should whack them"

Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version
Tech News

As reported in this recent Register article (also seeCNET), in 2002 Paul Flessner (Microsoft's senior VP of server apps), was apparently so incensed about Russell Holt's (VP of Dell's enterprise system group) panel discussion musings regarding Dell's enterprise Linux strategy, that he freaking went OFF within an email rant to his fellow Microsoft generals. The email, unearthed in Iowa antitrust procedings contained the following Flessner exhortation:

"We should whack them,
we should make sure they understand our value,
we should do all of the things you and Brian suggest,"

The e-mail contains an ongoing discussion of Dell's public commitment to Linux, and 'why in the #&@^%*$ doesn't Dell recognize the value that Microsoft adds to their PC's?!??!' And 'why are they messing up their relationship with Microsoft??!?' Of course if you look closely, they actually answer their own question, but seemingly let it deflect, as if they really didn't want to accept that Dell is just a hardware vendor looking to keep margins low to stay competitive with IBM in a very tight hardware market, especially enterprice server.

Microsoft spokesman Jack Evans reportedly defends the email thread, claiming that the plaintiff is changing the context by not admitting the entire email exchange. Besides, Evans points out that it 's not a smoking gun because the thread doesn't show that Microsoft took any retaliatory action against Dell.

EDITOR'S NOTE -- Whether or not Microsoft took action on this one issue is IMO actually irrelevant. The real piont here is that this email seems to show that Microsoft wasn't beneath at least discussing whacking their strategic business partners in order to keep them in line, which is of course what we've been compaining about for years now. Remember also that the Flessner e-mail was dated *after* Microsoft promised to Netscape-antitrust-trial judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly that it would stay on the straight and narrow.

Microsoft Reportedly Built in NSA Access to Overseas' Win Versions.

Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version
SecurityAccording to an article in Telopolis, back in '99 Andrew Fernandez, chief scientist of Cryptonym uncovered 2 keys in Windows' system file ADVAPI.DLL, 1 labeled "KEY", the second labeled "NSAKEY". This discovery led to much speculation as to the purpose of the key, whether it allowed the government agency to use Windows or whether it allows the NSA to spy on Windows users. Now, british researcher Dr Nicko van Someren has discovered a 3rd key in Windows 2000. The NSA keys are reportedly in all overseas versions of Windows from Windows 95 OSR2 onwards.

According to the article: "ADVAPI.DLL works closely with Microsoft Internet Explorer, but will only run crypographic functions that the US governments allows Microsoft to export. That information is bad enough news, from a European point of view. Now, it turns out that ADVAPI will run special programmes inserted and controlled by NSA. As yet, no-one knows what these programmes are, or what they do."

PS3 Sales Slumping

Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version
Game on!With many of our UHACCers standing in lines and consulting the great eBay for Wiis, it seems the popularity of the PS3 is waning quicker than most video game console releases. My choice has been the Wii since before the release dates even approached. In an article on HD Game News, the author points out that a recent GameStop stock shipment contained 7 PS3s, yet after two days, 5 of those still sat lonely on the shelf. The question is, what was your choice?

Linux Multimedia hopes may rest with Linspire

LinuxEric S. Raymond has a write-up about how not successfully tackling the multimedia issues in Linux before 2008 will ensure that Linux will remain a fringe OS for the rest of it's days.

Read World Domination 201 here. He comes to an interesting conclusion. Linspire currently has the agreements in place to SAVE Linux by making a capable multimedia enabled distribution with full legality on it's side. VERY interesting read.

Go to the forums to discuss this further.

Wal-Mart Sells Zune Pre-Loaded with Gay Porn

Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version
Tech News

The Zune personal media player purchased by a suburban Chicago couple and gifted to their 12-year old daughter came with an extra unadvertised feature: just under 2 hours of gay porn! Reportedly, the store manager attempted to blame the gaffe on Microsoft; But Wal-Mart seems to have quickly changed course once the issue was brought to the attention of the media. Looks like the megagoliath retailer now hopes to smooth the whole affair over with a $25 gift card. Yeah, let's see if the parents are so taken with Wal-Mart's ridiculously cheap-ass offer that they forget all about it. I'm also taking bets on the chances of hell freezing over, let me know. Priceless!

Monument to the Ridiculous: Motorola NFL Headsets

Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version
Tech News(Caution: this is editorial ranting. Treat as inane drivel if desired) I was watching an NFL game tonight and while everyone else busied themselves with analyzing the mechanics of the last turnover, I found myself staring at the most ridiculous headset affixed to the melon of the head coach of the Vikings. I suppose that I should've pondered this earlier; after all, I think that I first noticed these headsets at the onset of last year's NFL season. But somehow, I must've decided that Motorola may have designed a huge super-special headset, just for NFL head coach utility. Revisiting my initial reaction, I decided that something's not right. In a world of microscaled electronics, somehow the coach's headset gets bigger? What, does the headset beam the signal to and from space? Does it generate its own power? Does it phone home? Does it podcast? Encrypt/decrypt strongly? Audiocast in Dolby 5.1 surround? Store extra footballs? For cryin out loud, why in the world is it that big?

Alas, I have no answer, just observations and questions. Who knows, maybe the thing does something extraordinary which I'm not aware, like channeling, focusing and controlling the secret mutant power of each mutant wearer, much to the benefit of all humanity. In which case, I salute you Motorola!

Have any ideas or knowlege on the subject? Post em in the comments.

eBay Disallows Users Use of Google Checkout

Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version
Tech News

In a move schmecking of anti-competitive knee-jerking, the gi-normous auction behemoth eBay banned auction payment transactions via the new Google pay system, Google Checkout.

In the eBay "Accepted Payments Policy", eBay declares that "This policy is designed to promote safe online shopping, and to encourage online payment methods that are safe, easy to use, reliable, and offer high levels of protection for users." We are left to wonder which of these criteria they used to ban Google Checkout. In the absence of any specific officially published reasoning, users are left to let their imaginations run amok to find a reason; many inferring that eBay is trying to unfairly shield its Paypal asset from having to defend its market against Google's new online payment vehicle.

Consultant Breached FBI's Computers

Email Article To a Friend View Printable Version
SecurityJuly 6, The Washington Post - A government consultant, using computer programs easily found on the Internet, managed to crack the FBI's classified computer system and gain the passwords of 38,000 employees, including that of FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III. The break-ins, which occurred four times in 2004, gave the consultant access to records in the Witness Protection Program and details on counterespionage activity, according to documents filed in U.S. District Court in Washington. As a direct result, the bureau said it was forced to temporarily shut down its network and commit thousands of man-hours and millions of dollars to ensure no sensitive information was lost or misused.
