Go Tux! UHACC Linux Guide

Don't see your favorite distro? Send a writeup to the webmaster.

RedHat Linux

[Red Hat]

  • Compatibility: i386, Itanium, S/390.
  • Graphical or text install choice.
  • ext2 and ext3 filesystems.
  • Package management through use of RPM
  • Available for download in ISO format. Red Hat no longer provides a free version, see Fedora below.
SuSE Linux

[OpenSUSE]

  • Distro started in Germany by real Germans, bought by Novell.
  • Novell, having cold feet and forgetting where Linux comes from and who sacrificed what in order for them to enjoy a wonderful, useful, and marketable platform signed a deal with Microsoft to edge out some short-term advantage for themselves, at the expense of the rest of the F/OSS community.
  • UHACC voted to sanction Novell by removing links and any mention of their products. The vote was close, as we still recognize Novell's contributions; but we can't agree with a company who gives legs to the likes of Microsoft - now everyone else must endure M$ patent lawyers trolling for dollars because Novell essentially allowed M$ to say that Novell agrees that Linux violates Microsoft patents. Crap like this allows Microsoft to distract us when we should be moving forward.
Debian Linux

[Debian]

Gentoo Linux

[Gentoo]

  • Compatibility: i386, PPC, Sparc, HPPA
  • Built entirely from source
  • Uses Portage system for updates
  • Manual installation
  • Available for download in "stages" or LiveCD
Mandriva Linux

[Mandriva]

  • Compatibility: i386, i686, PPC
  • Package management using urpmi and mdkonline
  • This used to be called Mandrake Linux.
Slackware Linux

[Slackware]

Fedora Linux

[Fedora]

  • Sponsored by Red Hat.
  • Compatibility: i386, Itanium, S/390.
  • Graphical or text install choice.
  • Package management through use of RPM and yum.
  • Graphical (XFree86) startup screen.
  • Available for download in ISO format.
YellowDog Linux

[Yellow Dog]

  • Linux for PPC machines (Macs, RS/6000?).
  • Graphical installer
  • Package management practiced through either Debian-style "apt-get" or yum (Yellow-Dog Update Modified).
  • HOWTO's and tech help

[Ubuntu]
