UHACC's SCO-B-Q (July 2003)
Our Unix club was feeling quite a bit of frustration over the whole "SCO thing."
In fact, it went way beyond the anxiety we normally experience when contemplating normal-type Microsoft License-6 type treachery, what with SCO pumping trollish litigation like there's no tommorrow and all.
Well, we just couldn't not do something, so we took this opportunity to eat, drink and let SCO and their wacky leader Darl McBride know how we really feel about their screwy legal shenanigans.
We dubbed the event the SCO-B-Q.
OK, actually we didn't really cook outside - the only stuff getting barbequed here were copies of miscellaneous SCOware and Darl's effigy.
There was SCO-slaw, which went largely untouched by the masses, probably due to Darl's unappetizing mug posted there and the fact that it cost $699 per serving.
The beer was a much more inviting refreshment being that it didn't have Darl's face near it. All the beer was from Germany, the land with the legal system that sent SCO packing in short order.
And of course we had "Darl" tied to the stake. His shirt said "you owe SCO."
We also tried to find someone who actually *had* a copy of SCO or Caldera to torch but all we could come up with was an ancient copy of SCO Xenix. It had to do since I guess noone here really ever used SCO OpenServer.
Well, we came here to say *something,* might as well say it LOUD. Here's to SCO!
OKokok, enough pomp and circumstance, time to carry out sentence.
"Darl we find you and your disgrace of a company guilty of strongarm legal bamboozlery and slimy underhandedness for the attempted undermining of Linux and the entire open source movement."
Darl, for once, had nothing to say, so Phil and I lit him before he changed his mind.
WOO HOO! Darl goes down in flames. We hope this is symbolic of the future of SCO.
All in all I'd say we had a great time. I've never burned anyone in effigy before, but I'll say it was at the very least quite therapeutic!
Now if only this SCO nonsense would just evaporate, we could all go back to worrying about normal stuff (and have routine club cookouts!)...
